I'm assuming

sdb root on

only works for virtual devices, not physical devices?

You can use

>sdb -d root on

for physical devices

Usually if only one device is connected to a PC, there is enough 'sdb root on' command.

Right. But as far as I understand the topic starter experiences some problems with real device. In this case, IMHO, it may be better to use 'sdb -d root on'.
