First off, sorry if this is the wrong section for bug reports.
My report is about a general issue with MKV media playback on a wide variety of Samsung TV models. It is well-known in some communities but I couldn't find any reports about it here or in other Samsung forums.
I first learned about it here:
- https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-tizen/issues/217
- https://github.com/jeppevinkel/jellyfin-tizen-builds/issues/47
The TL;DR is that Opus audio does not play correctly on MKV videos, but works fine after remuxing to MP4. The source connection (USB or network) does not matter. Depending on the TV model, audio is completely missing, stutters or stops intermittently.
Affected TV models list support for MKV and OPUS. One example is GQ75QN92AATXZG, see page 162 of its manual: downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/202404/20240424192307337/OSNDVBEUA-7.8.0_EM_OSCAR_EU_ENG_240419.0.pdf
The only known workarounds are transcoding the audio of course, or remuxing MKV to MP4, which is not always possible.
